When Jonathan first contacted me about his proposal in Iceland, he already had an incredible idea in mind. He and his partner were travelling all the way from Hong Kong, and he wanted to propose somewhere that would feel completely different from anything they had experienced before. The plan was to take a private helicopter into the Icelandic Highlands, land on Eyjafjallajökull and ask the most important question of his life surrounded by Iceland's dramatic volcanic landscape.
The helicopter tour had been booked well in advance, but a few days before the planned flight, the company had to cancel because of a technical issue with the aircraft. Fortunately, we managed to find another helicopter company that could take us, so the plan could continue.
We met at Baki, a small and almost deserted airfield on the South Coast of Iceland. Since Jonathan had already been travelling around Iceland before our day together, I picked up a beautiful bouquet from Flowers by Monika and bought a bottle of champagne. I brought both with me and kept them hidden until after the proposal. Before the flight, Jonathan and I agreed on a simple signal. Once we landed and I knew that everything was right, I would let him know that it was time.
The proposal on Eyjafjallajökull
From Baki, we took off towards Eyjafjallajökull. Flying over Iceland is an experience in itself, with glaciers, mountains and huge areas of untouched volcanic terrain stretching out below us. When we landed, there was nobody else around. Just the two of them, the helicopter and the Icelandic wilderness.
I gave Jonathan the signal. He turned towards his partner, got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She said yes. We opened the champagne, brought out the flowers and took some time to celebrate before continuing our helicopter adventure.
From Eyjafjallajökull to Landmannalaugar
Our next destination was Landmannalaugar, one of the most spectacular areas in the Icelandic Highlands. The colourful mountains and volcanic landscape looked completely different from the scenery around Eyjafjallajökull, making it the perfect second stop.
After spending some time exploring the area, we flew back to Baki, where we said goodbye to the helicopter and continued the rest of the day by car.
Engagement Photography at Skógafoss, Kvernufoss & Black Sand Beach
From the airfield, we drove towards Skógafoss and Kvernufoss. We spent some time taking photos at both waterfalls, capturing a few more memories from their newly engaged adventure.
Our final stop of the day was Iceland's famous Black Sand Beach. The dark volcanic sand and dramatic coastline were the perfect backdrop to finish their engagement session.
After a day that started with a helicopter flight from a remote airfield, a proposal on Eyjafjallajökull and a journey through Landmannalaugar, we ended the day on Iceland's South Coast – with a newly engaged couple and plenty of memories to take home.
Why I Recommend a Helicopter Proposal in Iceland
If you are looking for something more than a beautiful place to propose, I would absolutely recommend a helicopter proposal in Iceland.
What I love about it is that the experience starts long before you reach the proposal spot. Flying above Iceland’s mountains, glaciers and volcanic landscapes already makes the journey feel like part of the story. And once you land somewhere remote, surrounded by nothing but nature, the moment feels incredibly personal.
You are not simply arriving at a viewpoint and asking the question. You are creating an experience you will remember for the rest of your lives.
For me, that is what makes a helicopter proposal so special. It combines adventure, intimacy and some of the most spectacular landscapes Iceland has to offer — while giving you a moment that feels completely your own.
If you are planning to propose in Iceland and want to make the experience truly unforgettable, a helicopter proposal is something I would highly recommend.
